Logan Coalfields

The story coal and its legacy in this state began in this region. In 1742, Coal was first discovered in West Virginia by John Peter Salley along the Coal River, in the town of Peytona, located in Boone County. This area, rich in the heritage and traditions of coal mining communities boasts numerous hamlets with humble beginnings as camp housing for the local coal mines.The communities of Blair in Logan County and Matewan in Mingo County were sites of bloody battles between miners and coal company operators in the efforts of the United Mine Workers of America to organize the southern coalfields.

This region is nationally recognized as the home of the "Hatfield McCoy Feud". The patriarch of the Hatfield clan, Anderson "Devil Anse" Hatfield lived and is buried admidst the rough hewn terrain and is well remembered. A life sized statue stands watch over the Hatfield Family Cemetery at Sarah Ann in Logan County.

Sporting over 500 miles of back country trails, ATV enthusiasts will want visit this outdoor paradise.  The Hatfield and McCoy Trails offers ATV operators year round access to well maintained and patroled trails.

Plans for a Country Roads Scenic  Byway Welcome Center and Interperprative Center are being developed. The new center will be located on Corridor G.
